Darrell’s story – in the beginning…
Darrell was referred to Foundation in September 2014 when he was 16 because he had nowhere to live. When he first started receiving support he said he felt like ‘my life was down the toilet, I had nowhere to live, my life was going nowhere and I was worried about where I might end up’.
When Foundation became involved Darrell said:
‘I was buzzing about getting a flat but thought it would be like, there’s the keys get on with it. I had never heard of Foundation. I didn’t think the service was going to be any good, and I didn’t think the staff would understand or get me. I didn’t get on with my first support worker and Foundation listened to me, I was shocked when I was able to change my support worker, this really helped me and encouraged me to continue working with Foundation. I got on loads better with my new support worker and have now seen how good the service is.’
Since Darrell began working with Foundation he has achieved many things that he didn’t believe he was capable of. Darrell is able to manage his tenancy and live independently in his own flat. He has worked with us to improve our processes for Health and Safety checks and has co-produced a letter to send to all customers informing them of changes that have been made. Darrell has really helped give a customer voice to the service and worked with us to improve things. Darrell has done a CV, application forms, interview preparation, completed Maths and English qualifications and is about to start an apprenticeship. Darrell has recently become a volunteer for Foundation and delivered a presentation to the Doncaster and Barnsley team on Legal Highs to raise awareness of the issues young people face. Darrell is going to do another presentation for Social workers and we are working with him to develop this in local schools.
The results so far…
With continued support from his Foundation worker, Darrell has been able to achieve loads of things that have improved his life. Darrell said:
‘I like volunteering more than I thought I would. I feel part of the team and like I have a purpose in life. I am more optimistic about the future and looking forward to the opportunities ahead of me’.
